About
It all started in 2013 when two friends Gazz and Mark who were incessantly boring all their other mates talking about their new hobby of homebrewing that the concept of organising a Homebrew Club in York was first formed. With a little push and shove York Brewery initially set up a club hosted by one of their younger brewers Sam in 2014. But by the end of the same year Gazz moved out to Cawood and was no longer able to attend midweek meetings due to the lack of buses so took it upon himself to form a second Homebrew Club that would run on a weekend and alternative to the York Brewery one. In another turn of events Sam was to leave York Brewery for Thornbridge and the Club there came to an end not long after.
The York Craft Ale Exchange was formed at the start of 2015 originally hosted by The Blue Boar, slowly it began to attract homebrewers from York and the surrounding area and one night two of the regular members Lee and Wayne announced that they were in fact setting up their own craft brewery, what was to become Brew York, and they wanted us to continue our meetings at their new venue. (We always knew their homebrew’s were good!) So in April of 2016 the Homebrew Club officially moved over to Brew York and hasn’t looked back since. Many close friends have been made and many, many very strong beers have been drunk and discussed.
After a hiatus in 2020 of over a year due to the Coronavirus Pandemic where we were restricted to online events and bottle swaps where we could, we returned to Brew York in 2021 rebranded as just the York Homebrew Club.
From 2023 all events will now be situated within the new Tasting Room in the Brew York Beer Hall.
In 2024 Gazz moved away to Otley but member Rob took over the running of the Club to keep it going for the future.
So if you’re a homebrewer or even just fancy taking the hobby up, then come on down to one of our friendly bi-monthly meetings to share your love of real craft beer!
